The Values of Interpersonal Communication and Accountancy.

 Consider the following question:

? "I can understand the value of interpersonal communication for lots of people, but I'm going to be an accountant.  Why should I study interpersonal communication?"

"Effective communication skills are critical to success in life, no matter what your job.  The National Communication Association in the US, examined nearly 100 articles and publications which call attention to the need for communication skills in contemporary society society.  Four major themes emerged that support the importance of communication education to:

  • the development of the whole person
  • the improvement of the educational enterprise
  • being a responsible citizen of the world, both socially and culturally; and
  • succeeding in one's career and in the business enterprise.

"A career in accounting is no exception.  The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Institute of Management Accountants recently gathered information from 91,000 members about communication skills most needed by newly hired accounting graduates.  Members of the two groups rated "listens effectively" highest of all, and "uses correct grammar in both spoken and written communication" took second place.

The answer is simple: good accountants need to communicate effectively and ethically!

(Extract from Joseph A DeVito's book, "The Interpersonal Communication Book." p 3)

 Now test yourself!

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE ABOUT INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION?

Mark T for true if you believe the statement is usually true or F if you believe the statement to be usually false:

 1.  Good Communicators are born, not made.

 2.  The more you communicate, the better at it you will be.

 3.  In your interpersonal communications, a good guide to follow is to be as open, empathic, and supportive as you can be.

 4.  The best guide to follow when communicating with people from other cultures is to ignore the differences and treat the other person just as you would treat members of your own culture.

 5.  Fear of public speaking is detrimental and must be eliminated.

 6.  When there is conflict, your relationship is in trouble.
