TELEPHONE SKILLS

Try this exercise from home:

Real life situations

Businesses are always interested in telling you about their products.

Find a product or service you are interested in and research it over the telephone. You can ...

  • call a store to find out the prices and specifications.
  • ring the company representative to find out details on how the product or service works.
  • telephone a consumer agency to find out if the product has any defects.
  • call customer service to find out about replacement parts, etc

  • Try telephoning a travel agency and make enquiries about a holiday you would like to take.
  • Take some notes afterwards and report back to class next week!

Explore  the BBC World Service/Learning English site and find one aspect you can talk about in the next class.

Complete  interviews of your partner and type them out.

    Ongoing:

Start thinking about communication when you are at work, and especially when you are looking for jobs.

Bring in any interesting reading you find.

Try sending interesting articles you find online to del.icio.us for us to look at and share.

Check  the listening and pronunciation sites we have also found on del.icio.us  and find one that you can talk about to the class.

Keep practising your touch typing skills! (For more activities, go to the Useful Rescources link in the sidebar)

Here's a great vocabularly site to try. Learning English as a second or foreign language (ESL / EFL) takes time, and building your vocabulary is an important key to improving your communication skills.  http://www.esl-lab.com/vocab/index.htm

Kaniz has found "Flat Mates" really useful and has subscribed to the email with a new episode which she now gets every week.
